Hive Queen

Page history last edited by Pedro "xeoncat" Miranda 14 years, 9 months ago

Summary

You are the ant champion of your colony (and you are quite good at capturing flags) and the enemy colony kidnapped your most beloved Queen. It is time for a rescue!

Materials

1 8x8 standard chess board (or a 8x8 grid drawn on paper)

2 chess pawns (b&w) (or 2 different tokens)

2 chess queens (b&w) (or other 2 different tokens)

1 six sided die

Beginning Setup

The players start at two opposing squares (the hives)

Movement and Objectives

Turn starts when the first player rolls the die. Rolling 1, 2 or 3 has values 1, 2 or 3 and 4, 5 or 6 have values of 1, 2 or 3 too. After the player moves, it is the other player's turn. What is forbidden is to get back to the same square you were on the same turn, i.e. if you roll for example a 2 you cannot move forward one square and move back to the first square again (you can do it on the next turn).

The objective is to get to the hive of the enemy colony and rescue your Queen, which will come with you back to your hive. You only win the game when you reach your hive safely.

Special Cases

You meet your nemesis (combat)

If you meet your enemy in the same square (which is more a product of your choice, since there's so much terrain to go around), you both roll the die once. The player that gets the higher result is entitled to move the enemy ant. For example, you are the white ant and roll a 5 and the black ant rolls a 3. The white player then moves the black ant 2 squares of his choice.

While you carry Your Highness on your back

While you have the Queen with you, you cannot move if you throw 1, 2 or 3. If you throw 4, 5 or 6, you move 1, 2 or 3 squares respectively. If the enemy gets into combat with you while you're carrying the Queen and wins the fight, he moves your ant but also moves your Queen if he gets a 4, 5 or 6 on the combat roll.

Both ants have their Queen

The first to get to his hive, wins.

Notes

it is better on a terrain of this size if the maximum squares you can move is 3, a development of this would be to try the game on a 16x16 board.

To Do

Test Play!

Consider the Central Hill Case

A special mount stands in the middle of the board. what it does, no one knows! Maybe a Praying Mantis, maybe Excalibur.

The Multiplication of the Ants Variation

Special squares call more ants to fight with you up to a number of 8 (?)
