Black Widow

"Black Widow!"

Based on a harrowing near death experience I had the other night!

Two to four players are caught in a black widow's web. Escape before she can catch you!

Game Type: Race to the End

Board layout: Spiral course overlay on a spider web.

Pieces: 4 player fly avatars + 1 Black Widow avatar

Objective: Start in the middle and make your way to the End. The first player to the end and escapes the web (or outlast all of the other players) wins.

Game Play:

-Each player takes a turn rolling the die and moves ahead that many spaces.

-At the end of each round, each player rolls the die again and the Black Widow moves ahead the lowest roll.

-Landing on another player knocks him back "down" one ring.

-If the Black Widow lands on your avatar, you are dead.

-If every player rolls the same number for the Black Widow, she jumps "up" one ring.

-If the Black Widow eats everyone, the last player alive wins.

Oooo, the jumping rings thing is very interesting. What happens if the Widow directly passes you? Or you directly pass the Widow? As opposed to landing on you, or jumping a ring past you.

I really like this one. It sounds like a lot of fun, and I agree that the jumping rings keeps things interesting and unpredictable.

Looks like the board would need to be larger near the center though, as the spaces are hard to see, let alone move a pawn on.

If widow jumps a ring could she move back if there are players trapped behind her? Also, does widow need to land exactly on a roll or just catch up. Can players who have been overtaken by a ring jump get past?

Thanks for the comments! After I posted I started realizing that there were some holes in the rules, especially what would happen if the black widow passed a player. I guess she should land directly on someone to eat them. What if the black widow has to move in the direction of the next closest fly? For example, if the widow is three spaces ahead of one player but five spaces behind the next, she would move backwards towards the closer player.

I agree that my board needs some work; I hammered it out pretty quick in Illustrator.

I really like the mechanic of everyone rolling a die to determine the Widow's move.

I'm not sure I like the end game of "if the black widow eats everyone alive the last player alive wins." I think the game should end right there. The first player to get out of the Web should be the winner.

It would be interesting if those who are "dead" still participates in the movement of the black widow (maybe with some sort of negative (e.g. full stomach = slower spider) to try to prevent the final player from reaching the end zone. Who, then, is really the winner? :)
