We (I) Must Succeed!

Summary

2-5 Players

Sure, teamwork is necessary to get to the top of the mountain, but what people remember is who got there first. The players represent a team of mountaineers trying to reach the top of a summit...but each one also wants the fame and glory of being the first one to plant their flag.

Time to Complete

20 minutes actual work, about 30 minutes sitting in my subconscious, 30 minutes writing it up and doodling.

Materials

  1. Game Board
  2. Coin
  3. 5 Player Pieces
  4. 5 Movement Pieces (with the numbering of +3, +2, +1, -1, and -2 on one side, and blank on the reverse side)

Objective

Be the first player to put your Player Piece on the 'End' position of the Game Board.

Explanations & Terminology

  1. Movement Pieces
    1. These pieces can either be active or inactive.
    2. When a piece is active, have it face up.
    3. When it is inactive, have it face down.
  2. Coin
    1. The coin is used to randomly decide success or failure.
    2. Heads is a success.
    3. Tails is a failure.
  3. Active Player
    1. The Active Player is the player whose turn it currently is.

Game Setup

  1. Each player selects one of the Movement Pieces randomly.
  2. The player with the highest number on their Movement Piece selects their Player Piece and puts it on the 'Start' position of the Game Board.
  3. The next highest player selects their Player Piece and places it on 'Start'. This continues until all players have selected and placed their Player Piece.
  4. Have all Movement Pieces be active.
  5. The players select whether they want to try a shorter or longer game. A shorter game has 9 squares between the 'Start' and 'End' positions, while a longer game has 18.
  6. The player who had the lowest number on the Movement Piece they selected becomes the Active Player.

Summary of Game Play

Players attempt to move up the mountain using the Movement Pieces. These are not sure things however, and a flip of the Coin will determine whether the player succeeds (and climbs up) or fails (and falls down). If the players work together, they should be able to succeed more often and mitigate their failures. As they reach the summit, however, altruism should go out the window as players begin a ruthless race to the top.

Game Play

Every turn, the Active Player may do one of the following actions.

  1. Attempt to move.
    1. The Active Player selects one of the active Movement Pieces.
    2. If it has a negative value, the Active Player moves their Player Piece backwards on the board that number of spaces (never going further than the 'Start' space). The Active Player's turn then ends.
    3. If it has a positive value, the Active Player flips the Coin.
      1. If the flip succeeds:
        1. The Active Player moves their Player Piece forwards on the board that number of spaces (if this would take them past the 'End' space, instead move them to the space just before it).
        2. If this places them on the 'End' space, that player wins the game. If it does not, the Active Player's turn then ends.
      2. If the flip fails, the Active Player may:
        1. Ask for Rope
          1. The Active Player can ask a player whose Player Piece is above the Active Player's piece to throw them a rope. If a player says yes, the Active Player can reflip the Coin to attempt the move.
          2. If that Coin flip fails, the Active Player can attempt to ask again. A player can not be Asked for Rope more than once a turn.
          3. If the Active Player is not thrown rope, they Fall.
        2. Fall
          1. If there is another Player Piece on the same space as the Active Player's piece, the Active Player's turn ends.
          2. Any player whose Player Piece is above the Active Player's piece may move their piece back one space to cancel the Fall. If they do so, the Active Player's turn ends.
          3. The Active Player moves their Player Piece back down the Game Board, stopping only when they are on the same square as another Player Piece or when they are on the 'Start' space. After this, their turn ends.
  2. Setup Base Camp
    1. This action may only be done if all the players agree to allow this.
    2. All inactive Movement Pieces are made active.

Afterwards, the player counter clockwise from the Active Player becomes the new Active Player.

Personal Observations

Right now, I feel the interaction needs a little bit more variance. While not perfect by any means, I do like the feel of the beginning and end of the game, but I think there may need to be more potential for interesting play in the middle. Although, at the moment the game may play quick enough to not need as much of that...hmm. This sounds like a job for more playtesting!
