Far and Away (Túl az Óperencián)

Page history last edited by Szonja Odrovics 14 years, 7 months ago

My name is Szonja Odrovics, I'm a PhD student working on my dissertation of virtual worlds, and I'm a hobbiist game designer.

The game I made is called Far and Away (Túl az Óperencián in Hungarian) is a family game (8+) about the mithology of Hungarian Fairly tales. The game is almost totally cooperative, but in ideal cases there is a player taking on the role of the Game Master. Players take on the roles of typical Hungarian folktale heroes, form a team, and start a journay to kill the seven-headed dragon. Meanwhile they meet some typical mithological beings who challange them (by drawing Trial Cards). If they succeed on the trials, they earn the support of these creatures in their fights. When they have earnt enough magical items (symbols of these creatures) or finished a certain amount of tirals, they must face the dragon.

At first I wanted to concentrate on creating a cooperative game for the family, but later on the challange of transmitting the unique taste of Hungarian folktales has just caught me. The inspiration came from my daughter: I just cannot wait until she will appreciate these tales and will be able to play board games with us:)

Unfortunately I have the game only in Hungarian at the moment, but the english version will hopefully be ready in some weeks. If you are interested anyway, you can download the game components and the ruleset here!

Note: I'm planning to continue playtesting after the course is over, currently I'm working on the fighing system, please consider this when trying the game. Feedbacks are welcome!:)

Printing instructions:

1) Print the characters and the dragon card on white paper. You can use colored papers for the back.

2) Print the storybook and the rulebook. It looks better if you use different colored papers for the cover.

3) Print the trial cards on white paper, 2 slides/page handout format: paper oientaion: landscape, slide orientation: portrait

4) Print the trial cards back file 13 times with the same settings, then cut the cards and glue together.

5) Print magic item cards on 3 different colored papers:

1st color: 1-19 - handout view, 6 slides/pages, paper oientaion: landscape, slide orientation: portrait

2nd color: 20-23 - handout view, 6 slides/pages, paper oientaion: landscape, slide orientation: portrait

3rd color: 24-33 - handout view, 6 slides/pages, paper oientaion: landscape, slide orientation: portrait

6) Print 6 copies of the back of the magic cards file on white paper, paper oientaion: landscape, slide orientation: portrait. Then cut the cards and glue together.

7) Create five "3-sided dices": take a corrector pen or a very small paint brush and paint white some dots on normal, white-faced dices as follows: 1 line of dots on the side with 6 (=3), 2 dots diagonally on the side with 4 (=2), and 4 dots around on the side with 5 (=1).

Thanks!
